Wanderlust Blues

Today I have been sick and feeling blue.  I started a new volunteering placement at a local playgroup on Wednesday.  All the kids were running about with snotty noses and sneezing everywhere.  Now I have a sore throat, sore ears, sore head, swollen glands and am just generally feeling sorry for myself.  I’ve been spending my day mostly thinking about getting away.  There is nothing I love more than to plan a trip somewhere, booking it, then devouring a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide to find out quirky places to go when I’m there.  Backpacking is my favourite way to travel.  You have your entire life on your back and you meet the most awesome, free-spirited people.  It’s all about doing things on a budget and completely absorbing the culture of wherever you are.  Sadly, because the boy is studying right now and I’ve been out of work due to surgery on my back and am starting college in August, we have no money to go away this year.  It’s really upsetting as it’s the first year I haven’t had any international trips booked or a trip to America.  However, we are planning something quite epic for next year (which is a secret for the time being) so I will just have to bide my time and in the meantime keep looking at my globe and reading my Lonely Planets in anticipation!  What’s the saying?  Good things come to those who wait?

“Welcome to the maxi pad!”

In my last blog I expressed my love for the movie Almost Famous and I said it was tied with another movie for first place in my top movies of all time.  Well, that other movie is Reality Bites.

I first heard about this  movie before it came out in 1994 when a friend of mine was given a cd sampler of the movie soundtrack.  By listening to that, I knew I had to see it.  I never managed to see it at the movies but as soon as it was released on video I rented it over a weekend.  I was hooked from my first viewing.  In fact, I think I watched it about 4 times that weekend.  I got it out again the following weekend and the weekend after and along the way my friends Niki, Kirsty and Lesley became hooked also.  I think for about 2 years one of us had it rented nearly every weekend and we would watch it with cans of Diet Coke, Doritos and dip.  It was a ritual.  I don’t think it actually dawned on any of us to buy it instead of renting it over and over!  I eventually bought it on video and then DVD and still watch it at least once a month.

I can’t explain what it is about this movie that I love so much as there isn’t exactly a gripping storyline.  What it does have are identifiable characters, my favourite being Vickie, and quotable lines a-plenty.  It captures the 90s perfectly!  I think my friends and I could probably recite this movies backwards and we often still say random quotes from it to each other.  To me, Reality Bites is like an old friend.  I don’t have to pay full attention to it and sometimes I just put it on in the background while I’m doing stuff.   I also own the soundtrack and still after 16 years  I love it and listen to it often.

Top 5 Reality Bites Quotes (so hard to choose, I could’ve done a top 25!)

001  “Why don’t you get a job at the Burgerama? They’ll hire you! My Lord, I saw on the TV they had this little retarded boy working the cash register.”

002  “I’m manager of the Gap.  I’m responsible for all those t-shirts.  French-cut, v-necked, ribbed, what have you.  Dude I’m in trouble.”

003  “Oh. PFLAG.  I’m beginning to like the sound of that.”

004  “I’m late for a jean-folding seminar.  Let’s locomote.”

005  “You look like a doily!”

My friend Kirsty had her birthday at the weekend.  She was one of the original Reality Bites gang and I thought to honour those times, I would make her a Reality Bites birthday card.  It turned out cooler than I expected and I was so proud of it, I swithered over changing the KIRSTY to LISA and keeping it for myself!  Anyway, I’ll leave you with a couple of photos of the finished product.  Please watch this movie if you haven’t already done so.  If you hate it, don’t blame me….maybe you had to grow up watching it!

“It’s all happening”

Almost Famous is one of my all-time favourite movies, definitely in my Top 3, it’s a tie between that and Reality Bites for Number 1.  I went to see it at the movies and was just lost in it.  I guess it’s no secret that I’m obsessed with the late 60s and 70s.  I often desperately wish someone would make a Doc Brown style Delorean time machine so that I could go back and live in that time period.  I love everything about that era, the music, the clothes, the fact young people stood up for what they believed in and women stood up for gender equality. It all just seemed so free.  People were free to wear what they wanted, do want they wanted, believe what they wanted, express who they were in whatever way they wanted and just be.  I’m pretty sure I would have protested war with the best of them and probably would’ve lived in a commune.  It must have been amazing to be a part of, what was, an incredible time for music.  I would have loved to see Janis Joplin, The Band or Led Zeppelin back in the early days and gone to Woodstock.  For me, Almost Famous captures the essence of that era.  What I wouldn’t give to be Penny Lane, not for the groupie “band-aid” aspect per se, but to be so in love with a band and fortunate enough to be able to tour with them and inspire music.  It must have been magical.

My favourite quote from the movie

I’m known as being a bit of a dreamer and I’m sure I romanticise the idea of hippie in my head a bit too much but I guess in my own way that’s what I am.  The dictionary definition of hippie is….

“A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.”

This is me.  I don’t crave the idea of settling down in one place with a 9-5 job and furniture just like everyone else from Ikea and cushions and bedding from Next Home.  To be perfectly honest, the idea of that scares me and I feel trapped just thinking about it.  I want to travel the world and live in different places experiencing different cultures.  I can’t stand cookie cutter houses.  I like individuality and creativity.  I believe in total equality for everyone no matter what your gender, sexuality, religion, ethnicity.  I often get called weird or get funny looks when I express my ideas but I don’t care. The hippies fought for the right to be who you wanted to be and I won’t change who I am for anyone.

Beautiful People ~ Winona Ryder

Back when I was about 10 or 11, I became a huge fan of Winona Ryder.  She was the first female star I’d ever looked up to.  I thought she was beautiful, quirky, had awesome cropped hair and best of all, she was dating Johnny Depp!  I was in love with Johnny Depp.  I had an entire wall in my room devoted to him and I really thought that one day I might become Mrs Depp!  But I thought if I couldn’t have him then I was glad he was with someone as cool as Winona.  He even had a tattoo in her honour stating “Winona Forever”.  I thought that was the most romantic thing, ever!

Winona Laura Horowitz was born in 1971 in Minnesota, USA.  She was named after the nearby town of Winona and later chose the surname Ryder after listening to a Mitch Ryder record that belonged to her Dad.  She grew up with hippie parents and when she was 7 the family joined a commune called Rainbow in Elk, California.  The commune didn’t have a tv but she used to watch movies in the barn with her Mom which inspired her love for acting.  Her first movie was ‘Lucas’ in 1986 and since then she has starred in a ton of awesome movies; ‘Beetlejuice’, ‘Mermaids’, ‘Edward Scissorhands’, ‘Little Women’, ‘Reality Bites’, Girl, Interrupted’ and ‘Heathers’ to name a few.  More recently, she has been in the press after a well documented arrest for shoplifting and sadly the relationship with Johnny ended and the tattoo now reads “Wino Forever”.  Personally, I don’t care about the bad stuff written about her, her arrest, the fact that her career has pretty much come to a standstill, I will always think of her as someone who I admired and helped form my teenage years in some way.

Winona with Cher in Mermaids

Winona with Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands

Winona with Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites

It’s pretty hard to choose but my top 5 Winona Ryder movies are…

1. Reality Bites

2. Edward Scissorhands

3. Mermaids

4. Little Women

5. Girl, Interrupted
